Geeking out with Toby, Pete, & WordPress at Minnewebcon
Tomorrow at 11 Toby Cryns (the Mighty Mo guy) and I will be hosting a WordPress Geekout at Minnewebcon. We did this once before at the MIMA Summit and had a great time and the participants were very engaged. We'll share a few wordpressy things we've learned or stumbled upon and try to answer any and all questions. We encourage all in attendance to share their WordPress tips too. We won't involve ourselves in the WordPress vs. Drupal debate. So if you're at Minnewebcon, consider dropping by our session at 11!

New show at 950 AM showcases immigrant voices in Minnesota
Through interviews, profiles and news reports Reflections of Minnesotans looks to provide a platform for Minnesota's diverse immigrants.
My friend Julia Nekessa Opoti is the co-host (and producer) of a new hour-long radio show at AM950 called Reflections of New Minnesotans. Check it out at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Her co-host is Siyad Abdullahi. Julia is a great choice for hosting the show. She has been doing community outreach for the Cedar-Riverside E-Democracy forum (mostly working with Somali immigrants) for some time and she has reported on (mainly East African) immigrant issues for Twin Cities Daily Planet and other local news sites. She blogs over at my lower case and the About page there tells more about her background. Check the Reflections of New Minnesotans blog. They just posted their third show, an interview with Innocent Limo (pardon the spelling) from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, who farms in Minnesota part of the year and gives tours back in Tanzania in the remainder. Previous shows include an interview with Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, and interviews with Dahir Jibreel, Ahmed Jama, and Ali Egal—local Somali immigrants working in the justice system. Good luck, Julia! May you have a a run of many, many shows. Here's the Podcast link:

Valley Fair's flooded roller coaster
I tweeted this image out earlier with a link to the Secrets of the City site where I found it. But I wanted a bigger picture of it and found one at the MPR story (linked from SOTC). MPR (and SOTC) attributed the image to MN DHS and I decided to try and find the original. "DHS" is the Department of Human Services which seemed an odd place for this photo to start from. I wondered if they actually meant "Department of Homeland Security." I was right but Homeland Security isn't DHS it's DPS (Department of Public Safety) or SEOC (State Emergency Operations Center) and HSEM (Homeland Security Emergency Management). I guess it was easier to borrow the Human Services acronym. The original (plus another Valleyfair shot among others) is over at an HSEM site in the slide show.
